Rail is a popular choice for business travel thanks to its flexibility, comfort, and lower environmental impact. To help you travel with confidence, here are answers to some of the most common rail questions we receive from customers.
What’s the difference between Advance, Off-Peak and Anytime fares?
Understanding ticket types can help you balance cost and flexibility
- Advance fares are usually the cheapest option, but they come with restrictions. They are valid only on the specific train you booked and cannot usually be changed without a fee.
- Off-Peak fares offer more flexibility and can be used on trains that run outside the busiest travel times. They are a good middle ground between price and flexibility.
- Anytime fares provide the maximum flexibility. They allow travel on any train on the selected route and date, including peak services, but are typically the most expensive.
If you are unsure which fare is best for your journey, the Hotel & Travel Solutions team can advise based on your travel needs.
How do refunds and delays work?
- If your train is cancelled or significantly delayed and you decide not to travel, you can usually claim a full refund for your unused ticket.
- If you do travel and arrive late, you may be entitled to compensation through the train operator’s Delay Repay scheme.
As refund and compensation rules can vary by ticket type and operator, we recommend contacting the HTS team, who can confirm the options available for your specific booking.
What happens during strikes or severe weather?
During strikes or severe weather, rail services may be reduced, delayed, or cancelled. In these situations:
- Travel restrictions are often relaxed, allowing tickets to be used on alternative services or dates.
- If you choose not to travel, you are usually entitled to a full refund.
Again, HTS is on hand to check the latest arrangements and advise on the best course of action.
Can I book international rail tickets?
Yes. International rail tickets can be booked for many routes across Europe and other regions. Please contact the HTS team to discuss routes, availability, and the best ticket options for your journey.
Is travelling by train better for the environment than driving?
Yes. Travelling by train is generally far better for the environment than driving or flying, particularly for medium- and long-distance journeys. Trains produce significantly lower CO₂ emissions per passenger, making rail a more sustainable choice for business travel.
